Five Favorite Children’s Books for Fall

Fall is the season for all things cozy and nothing is cozier than snuggling up with your little one to read a book! There is a lot of change to observe outside during this magical season from the colors of the leaves to the excitement of many animals getting ready for the cold winter ahead. This is a perfect time for children to get outside, collect treasures, and notice all there is to see around them. The stories below showcase the beauty of autumn and spark wonder and curiosity in young readers with important lessons, heartwarming and silly characters, and beautiful illustrations. We are excited to share our 5 favorite fall books with you!

The Leaf Thief by Alice Hemming

This silly story is about a squirrel who is on a mission to expose the thief that’s been stealing his leaves. It will be sure to have your little one giggling and you too. Squirrel teaches us all a lesson about coping with change, while the story and illustrations highlight some of the changes your child might be witnessing right outside their own window.

The Scarecrow by Beth Ferry

A lonely scarecrow is gifted an unlikely friend when a baby crow falls into his lap. Scarecrow protects the baby crow as he grows and a special friendship is formed. Until one day, the crow must fly away leaving the scarecrow alone, yet again. But when the crow eventually returns in the spring, an even greater gift is bestowed upon the scarecrow. This book demonstrates a beautiful lesson in kindness and the value in friendships with those who are different from us.

Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Pak

Take a walk with a young girl as she greets the elements of nature. Along her path, she encounters a puddle, a gust of wind, various creatures, and members of her community. They greet her back describing the changes they are experiencing and ways they are preparing for the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. The colorful illustrations and friendly story will highlight the changes your little one might have already observed around them while also pointing out changes they may not have noticed before.

Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert

This fall classic is particularly fun because it will encourage your children to get outside and make their own creation out of leaves. Leaf Man will spark their imagination, encourage play, and add a new level of fun to your fall.

Duck & Goose, Find a Pumpkin by Tad Hills

Board books are extra special, especially when they are oversized like this one. Follow along with these sweet and likely familiar characters as they search for a pumpkin. This book is perfect for the littlest of readers but enjoyed by all!
